El canario Dactah Chando es con diferencia uno de los cantantes más interesantes y prolíficos de reggae en idioma español. Inició su carrera profesional en 2009 colaborando con el cantante Frank Dellé en la gira de presentación de su disco Before I grow old.
A partir de ese momento comenzaron a sucederse hechos tan importantes como el lanzamiento de su primer single internacional «Power fi chant», distribuido por Warner Music Europe, el cual incluía colaboraciones tan importantes como las de Alborosie, Gyptian, Louie Culture, Luciano y el propio Dellé (cantante de la banda SEEED).
Como consecuencia, el mismo productor de este single, Guido Craveiro, se encargaría de la producción de su primer álbum de estudio, «Clara», editado en 2011 y acogido con una estupenda crítica no solo en España sino también en Europa, EEUU y America Latina. Gracias a este trabajo, Chando presentó su nuevo trabajo en varios países de Europa como cabeza de cartel en el Weed Festival (Al) y Östroda Reggae Festival (Pol) y en el Rototom Sunsplash (Es), acompañado por una banda formada por Guido Craveiro especialmente para la presentación de este álbum.
En 2013 comienza una nueva etapa en la carrera de Chando, cuando se lanza su segundo álbum «Sabiduría», dando otro giro musical en el estilo de composición y producción. En esta ocasión cuenta con grandes productores de la escena reggae europea, como Roberto Sánchez, Umberto Echo, Guido Craveiro, Rob Smith, Dub Visionist, illbilly Hitec… resultando un álbum completamente innovador y original dentro de la escena reggae en idioma español. Canciones como «Ningún hombre», «Mantente firme» y «Woman, escúchame» forman parte de un auténtico álbum master piece en su género. En el invierno de este mismo año, Dactah Chando realiza un tour europeo por seis países diferentes en los que ofreció veintiocho conciertos.
Ya en 2014 edita su álbum «Sabiduría Roots», con el que vuelve a experimentar un nuevo giro en el estilo de producción. Ahora opta por el roots reggae, esencial, puro, hecho a mano, con sonidos mas clásicos y grabado por músicos provenientes de cuatro países diferentes. Esta vez el principal productor es el maestro de este estilo, Roberto Sánchez, y el productor y músico alemán Umberto Echo es quien coproduce tres cortes del álbum, como el single «Natty», mientras que Rob Smith mezcla el resto de los tracks, «Soy lo que soy», «Canto de Paz» y «Blessings all about». En este mismo año, Dactah Chando vuelve a ser cabeza de cartel de la décima edición del Weed Beat Festival, acompañado de Next Generation Family Band, además de presentar su último trabajo discográfico en el Carnaval Internacional de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, entre otros muchos festivales.
Dactah Chando se consolida en 2015 como uno de los exponentes más importantes de la música reggae hecha en España en los últimos años, consiguiendo que sus álbumes se sitúen entre los cien más vendidos de música en general en el país con la edición física de «Sabiduría Roots» en junio de 2015. En este mismo año, la biografía artística de Dactah Chando aparece publicada en el libro biográfico Life Beyond Reggae Music −obra que cuenta con biografías de músicos de reggae no jamaiquinos− editado en EEUU. En octubre de 2015, se publica su maxi single «Tu Juicio», otra nueva producción del maestro del D ń B́ Rob Smith, con un genial video de cómic-animación, situándose a la vanguardia de las creaciones en este género en Europa.
En 2016 lanza su último álbum de estudio, «Ansestral», con otro nuevo enfoque para la carrera del artista, un álbum con influencias jazz y soul, producido íntegramente por Umberto Echo que cuenta con la colaboración de músicos internacionales de jazz. Es un álbum exquisito, de sonido impecable, arreglos y solos de gran belleza, en el que se combina la expresión melódica de sus letras con unos paisajes instrumentales de gran calidad. El primer video single de este álbum, «Positivo» entró en los charts mas importantes de Europa, como Dj Music Charts, Black Music Charts y en radio estaciones estatales como FunkHaus Europa, superando las treinta y cinco semanas. Participaciones en festivales tan importantes como Cabo de Plata y Viñarock son muestras de la consolidación del artista.
En 2017, Chando edita una serie de singles colaborando con diversos productores internacionales así como producciones propias, con un alcance espectacular en los Global Reggae Charts con canciones como «Rebel», «Vanity», «Tha swing», «Journey» y «Afrocanario», durante más de seis semanas en lista entre los veinte primeros puestos. A finales de este mismo año edita su quinto álbum, Live, el primer álbum en directo, grabado en su tierra natal, Tenerife. Es un álbum con trece cortes en el que se resume perfectamente la trayectoria y discografía del artista hasta el momento.
En 2018, Chando edita su sexto álbum de estudio, Global Cityzen, nuevamente producido por él mismo y por Umberto Echo y con la colaboración de The Evolution −banda radicada en Alemania conocida por ser la banda soporte del artista Gentleman−. En las sesiones de grabación, Global Cityzen se configura como la nueva apuesta internacional del canario, con canciones de temática global, escritas en inglés y en español, de sonidos clásicos con un toque fresco, sin perder la esencia de las melodías originales y características del tinerfeño.
Guardians of Dub, su séptimo disco de estudio publicado en primavera de 2019 – y primer álbum dub del cantante y productor canario. Álbum que cuenta con nueve versiones dub remezcladas por el ingeniero y productor Umberto Echo, responsable de la producción y mezcla de «Ansestral» y «Global Citizen», cuarto y sexto álbum de DC, y conocido además por sus producciones en numerosos trabajos discográficos de bandas y artistas internacionales de renombre en el género reggae. En este trabajo se incluyen canciones de la discografía completa del artista canario (2011-2018) – versionadas y con arreglos hasta ahora inéditos–, que ha contado en sus grabaciones con la participación de un gran número de los mejores instrumentistas y productores de la escena reggae europea, como son Guido Craveiro, Roberto Sánchez,Toby Nambur o Genis Trani. Canciones icónicas en el repertorio de DC –«Clara», «Natty» o «Alto Grado», entre otras–, han sido remezcladas y dotadas de una atmósfera elegante y novedosa por el dub master de Münich, y masterizadas por otro de los grandes del reggae dub europeo, Dieter Pimiskern –quien ya había sido el responsable del mastering en otros trabajos del artista.
En 2020, DC lanza algunos singles como: “Ningun Hombre Roots”, “Crisis”, “Green Banana”, “Cantando”, y a pesar de ser un año complicado y donde sus giras tuvieron que ser canceladas.
2021 vio la luz su octavo álbum llamado «XXI», un trabajo grabado entre 2018 y 2020 con parte de sus músicos de directo, en un parada en su gira presentación en Alemania, el resultado en un nueva colección de grandes canciones con un sonido y mensaje bastante relevantes, con piezas como “pase lo que pase” o “te quería”, que rápidamente han vuelto a conquistar a la audiencia internacional. Alguno singles completarían el año como «Garden of Eden» junto a los Emeterians y «Mujer Sencilla». Además en este año DC produjo y mezclo trabajos para Lot Acosta y el ultimo álbum de Abel Corodovez : «Give Thanks».
Cerrando 2021 se lanzó el noveno álbum «Guardians of Dub vol.2», esta vez presentando al remixer y Dj británico Rob Smith aka RSD.

Dactah Chando, more than music from Canary Islands.
Whether Dactah Chando’s unmistakably easy-going style is inspired by the enormous waves braking on the black volcanic beaches of his home island Tenerife, or whether Reggae’s mighty sound waves inspired the young Canarian musician to jump on his surf board, remains a hen-and-egg issue; one brings forth the other and is incomplete without it.
Off the shores of Africa, yet in the middle of the Atlantic, the Canarian Islands are home to Antonio Fernando Bethencourt Sosa, better known as the charismatic Reggae artist Dactah Chando. Throughout the centuries, Latin American and European influences, both looking to Africa with at least one eye, by and by formed the Canarian musical landscape. Soon, the music of the islands would embrace a symbiotic relationship with the local surf culture and create a lifestyle for which the boundaries of this world seem to be no longer relevant. Born into this surf music culture, right in the middle of the boundless vastness of the ocean, during the course of time, Chando developed his very own style.
Still a teenager, he would sub the Wailers’ percussionist or play drums for Aswad-founder Brinsley Forde, who is also living in Tenerife and with whom Chando maintains a close friendship until this very day.
Back in 2011, his first album Clara already possessed features of the unique Dactah Chando attitude: freedom-loving and to the point, mind-expanding and yet grounded and above all, as the title suggests, Clara was a consciousness-clearing album which attracted a wide audience, in Spain and also beyond. It was released through Achinech Productions and Echo Beach and produced by Chando himself in cooperation with Toby Nambur and Chuido Craveiro.
After the title song Clara (2009), the international Reggae massive eagerly waited for almost two years before the same-named album was finally dropped. Its 21 tracks harmoniously conflate into a homogeneous entity like a shoal of fish in the sea. Without endangering the songs’ lyrical and musical individuality at any point, they form a colorful and unified piece of art. Among these tracks is the One Drop anthem Power Fi Chant, which’s instrumental (Hooded Claw Riddim) was introduced by co-producer Guido Craveiro, who created it during an earlier production with Seeed singer Frank Dellé.
Since then, similar collaborations with the Seeed camp, both live and in studio, became fairly frequent. Dellé and Chando performed a legendary Duet at a concert at the Cologne City Garden back in 2011, while Seeed member Tobson Cordes picked the bass at numerous shows during that time. The exclusive use of Seeed Riddims that would later continue to influence Chando’s career can also be traced back to these early friendships. In addition, the bonus track Hooded Claw Mega Mix, a riddim medley feat. Tanya Stephens, Luciano, Gyptian and Alborosie, constitutes an appropriate and full-flavored outro for this very substantial album. All in all, Dactah Chando triggered quite a boom in the reggae scene with his debut in 2011. The Spanish-speaking singjay, who flows authentically over different flavored riddims, basically came over night and left many speechless with his first album Clara. Giving a voice to a Spanish speaking audience, Chando’s name quickly was on everybody’s lips within the south American and European scenes. Consequently, many festival and club shows in Poland, Germany, Spain and Slovakia followed the release of Clara.
It didn’t take long until the West African Mauretania as well as Venezuela were toured, and Chando occupied several headliner slots at Europe’s big festivals (Ostrada Reggae Festival, Weedbeat, Rototom Sunsplash). The European broadcasting studio WDR awarded Clara the title “Album of The Month”, while two singles were circulating in the Black Music Charts in Germany for several weeks. In the same year, an extensive tour with the well-known backing band Illbilly Hitec from Berlin lead Chando to other European countries like Norway, Czech Republic and France.
After weeks of extensive touring, and not even one year after Clara, Chando met with producer Roberto Sanchez in Santander, Spain, in order to start working on another album project called Sabiduria Roots (Roots of Wisdom). However, before this album was even released, the project had already aroused the attention of the British producer Rob Smith aka RSD. The renowned producer was actually only supposed to take care of the mix of the album, when everybody realized that he could give a whole new face to it with his dub- and dubstep inspired sounds. Suddenly, Guido Craveiro, who had already worked with Chando for Clara, also was back with remixes for Woman Escuchame and Ningun Hombre. Dubmaster Umberto Echo contributed another remix with Yo, which is home to the distinctive voice of Sarah Lugo and eventually, the remix collection was finalized with two exclusive versions over Seeed and Peter Fox Riddims (Dickes B and Schwarz Zu Blau), and released by the name of Sabiduria before the initial album Sabiduria Roots.
When the latter came out through Lone Arc Productions as the third album, the name Dactah Chando already rang a bell in pretty much every informed reggae listener’s head and titles like Power Fi Chant and Es En Jah decorated playlists of thousands of reggae heads worldwide. Even those who didn’t speak Spanish were fascinated by the Canarian Style Reggae Dactah Chando had put forth.
Umberto Echo had already produced two tunes for Sabiduria Roots, (Natty and Predicalo). Therefore, it is not surprising that the fourth album Ansestral also stands out through Echo’s characteristic production style and through the vibe of the musicians who surround him, better known as the Next Gemeration Family.
Positivo (2016) the first single from Ansestral, as well as tunes like Woman Escuchame soon caused numerous TV and Radio air plays and consequently even more international attention. Ansestral stayed in the Top Ten of the American University Album Charts for over two months and Positivo remained in the Top 20 of the DDJC Black Music Charts for more than half a year.
Additionally, the video singles Alto Grado and Dread En El Parlament, just like the video for the single Ningun Hombre, which has been clicked on by over half a million users, count among Dactah Chandos biggest achievements.
Once, in an interview with Reggaeville, Chando said “there is no future,” in order to describe the timeless feeling he enjoys so much about surfing. Living the moment and realizing the confluence of present and future are topics that occupy Chando day in and day out, in studio and also in his private life. The results are tunes like Ahora Es Tiempo (now is the time) or I Chant. The detachment from time inherent in Chando’s lyrics becomes especially present in his live performances, which were manifested on the live album Live At Reggae Can Festival 2017.
In this context, Chando’s feature with Gentleman on the Superior Riddim is especially worth mentioning. In 2017, the two created unforgettable moments to an ecstatic audience at the Feeling Festival in Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife.
For 2018 Dactah Chando Releases his sixth album Global Cityzen through Achinech Productions and was, like Ansestral and parts of Sabiduria, produced by Umberto Echo. The album was toured extensively around Europe, considering that was the first Dactah´s album mostly in English language.
In 2019 Is the time for the seventh album Guardians of Dub, first Dub album from the canario, a dub compilation of his entire career remixed and dubbed again by Umberto Echo. This time the release tour of this album take Chando trough Europe and Argentine.
After several albums, and facing 2020 as a year with lots of live performances, as the pandemic break thru, Chando releases some singles, and work on some new music to come, like the brand new album for 2021: XXI, released it in January of this present year, again a collection of 8 amazing studio songs, recorded in Berlin during the tour, and again mixed and dubbed by Umberto Echo.
More music come along this 2021, including other singles, albums and production for other artists, and to finish the year, the ninth studio album release “Guardians of Dub vol.2” will be launched the 17th of December, a new collection of dub versions made by the great Rob Smith.
